Water is backing up right now: what to do first
Find out how many fixtures are affected. If only one drain is slow or full, the clog is in that fixture's own branch line. If the shower gurgles when the toilet flushes, or the tub fills when the washer drains, the blockage is farther downstream in the main line, and every minute of water use adds to the problem.
While you wait for the plumber
- Stop using every sink, tub, toilet and the washing machine until the line is clear.
- Do not pour chemical drain opener into a standing blockage. It sits in the pipe and burns whoever opens it next.
- Move rugs and electronics away from the lowest drain, usually a tub, shower or floor drain.
- Take a photo of any water that has already come up. Your insurer may ask for it later.
City pipe or your pipe? The line that decides who you call
Where the city's responsibility ends in Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach runs its own water and sewer through the Water Division of Public Works. That split matters at 11 at night. A backup in the street, or sewage rising in several homes on your block, is a city main problem, and the city lists an emergency line for water and sewer at 904-247-6278. The regular office, at City Hall on North Third Street, is 904-247-6241 on weekdays.
Everything inside your property line is yours to fix. That includes the lateral that runs from your house to the city connection. If the street looks fine and only your house is backing up, a plumber with a cable machine is the right call, and a quick call to the city line can confirm the main is not involved. Ask us if you are unsure and we will help you sort it out.
Snaking and cabling: how a drain actually gets cleared
Drain cleaning is not one tool. The cable has to match the pipe, and using the wrong one is how clogs come back in a week. A plumber reads the symptoms first, then chooses the machine.
Hand auger
A short hand-cranked coil for a trap or a few feet of tub or sink line. It clears hair and soap plugs without much risk to old pipe.
Drum machine with a small cable
A motorized drum feeds a thin cable through kitchen and bathroom branch lines. The cutting head spins through grease and sludge so the line flows full again.
Sectional cable machine
Heavy, stiff cable sections for the main drain and cleanout. It pushes through roots and packed debris where a small cable would only bend and stall.
Drain camera
A small camera on a flexible rod shows what is in the pipe when cabling does not explain the problem. It tells us whether you need a clearing or a repair.
A cable opens a hole through a clog, but it does not scrub the pipe wall. When grease or scale keeps rebuilding the plug, hydro jetting is the better tool because water pressure scours the full diameter of the line.
| What you notice | Where the clog likely is | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| One sink drains slowly | That fixture's trap or branch line | Hand auger or small drum cable |
| Kitchen sink slow, dishwasher noisy | Grease and food buildup past the trap | Drum cable, then jetting if it returns |
| Gurgling in several fixtures | Partial blockage in the main drain or a vent problem | Sectional cable from the cleanout, camera if needed |
| Washer drain overflows the standpipe | Lint and soap buildup or a main line restriction | Cable the standpipe line, check the main |
| Floor drain bubbles when water runs elsewhere | Main line blockage | Cable through the cleanout, then camera |
Drain slope, trap arms and cleanout access are all set by the state plumbing code, Florida Building Code, Plumbing, a code that follows the IPC. When a clog keeps returning, that code language is often what a plumber checks the line against.
A clog does not wait for business hours
Call (904) 561-8133 and a dispatcher will find out what is backing up, then send a licensed plumber with the right cable for the line.
Kitchen sink clogs: the grease and starch problem
Kitchen lines clog differently from bathroom lines. Cooking fat runs down warm and liquid, then cools on the pipe wall and catches rice, pasta, coffee grounds and eggshell. Over months the bore shrinks to a thin channel, and one more handful of food scraps shuts it. That is why the sink often drains fine for weeks, then quits all at once.
If your disposal runs but the sink still stands full, the blockage is past the disposal. A plumber will usually pull the trap to check for a plug there, then cable the wall line. A disposal that hums and will not turn is a separate fix, and our team on garbage disposal repair covers that.
Slow drains, gurgling and a washer that backs up
Gurgling is air being pulled through a water seal because the pipe behind it is restricted. It is an early warning, not a nuisance. A drain that is slow at the bathroom sink but fine everywhere else usually has hair and toothpaste scum on the pop-up or in the trap, and a plumber can clear it quickly.
A washer that backs up into the laundry standpipe is a different matter. Washers move a lot of water fast, so a line that handles a sink can still overflow under a full discharge. If the standpipe overflows even when the line looks clear between loads, a camera inspection will show whether the main has a belly or a root intrusion.
Shower and tub drains, and drain lines that leak
Hair wraps on the crossbar or stopper, and soap binds it into a mat. Pulling the strainer and removing it often fixes a slow tub. If water rises around your ankles after that, the clog is deeper in the line and needs a cable.
A drain line that leaks is a repair, not a cleaning. Signs include a damp ceiling below a bathroom, a musty smell with no visible source, or water that disappears under a slab-edge wall. When a cable run turns up a cracked or separated section, we will show you the camera footage and quote the repair separately. For deeper lines, sewer line cleaning and camera inspection explain the next steps.
What shapes the price of a drain cleaning
We give you a clear price before work starts, after the plumber has seen the drain. Here is what moves the number.
Homeowner policies usually cover sudden and accidental water damage, not the clog itself or gradual leaks. Check your own policy, and photograph any damage before cleanup.
The real number depends on your line, so call and describe what you see.
Drain Cleaning questions in Jacksonville Beach
Yes. Our dispatch runs 24/7, and a backup at 2 in the morning gets the same licensed plumber and the same clear price before work starts as a weekday call. We do not promise an arrival time because it depends on traffic and what other emergencies are open, but we will tell you honestly when we call back.
It depends on how many homes are affected. If sewage is rising in the street or several neighbors are backed up, call the city water and sewer emergency line at 904-247-6278. If only your house is affected, the blockage is on your side of the property line and a plumber is the right call.
We would skip it. Chemical openers can sit in a fully blocked pipe, soften older plastic fittings and splash on whoever opens the trap afterward. A cable removes the clog mechanically, and tells the plumber what the clog was made of.
A cable opens a path through grease, but it leaves the coating on the pipe wall. The fat rebuilds fast. Jetting scours the walls, and changing what goes down the drain stops the cycle. Ask the plumber to check for a sag in the line as well.
Yes. We cable the standpipe line, then check the main from the cleanout. If the washer keeps overflowing after clearing, we use a camera to look for roots, a belly or a damaged joint.
Clearing a clog normally does not involve new piping, but repairs and replacement can. Ask the Building Inspection Division at 904-247-6100 if you are unsure, and we will tell you before any repair if a permit is needed.
A clog that returns within days, a cable that stops at the same spot every time, or a camera that shows a crushed or offset section all point to a damaged pipe. In that case clearing again only buys time, and a repair is the real fix.
If water is standing in a fixture right now, the fastest next step is one call to dispatch.
