Stop the water first, then call
Shut it down while you wait
These steps limit damage until a plumber arrives, and none of them need tools.
Close the main shutoff
It is usually a ball valve or a round gate valve near the water meter or where the line enters the house. Turn it fully closed. If you cannot find or move it, the meter box has a city-side valve, but leave that one to the city.
Relieve pressure
Open the lowest faucet in the house and a few others upstairs. Water in the pipes drains out and the leak slows.
Kill power in wet zones
If water is near outlets, appliances or the panel, do not stand in it. Shut breakers only if you can reach the panel dry.
Photograph and move things
Take photos of the damage before cleanup, then lift furniture and electronics out of the wet area.
What a burst or cracked pipe looks like
The obvious version is water spraying from a wall or ceiling. The quiet version is a pinhole that leaks under pressure, a hairline crack in a drain line, or a split along a copper pipe that stains the wall below it. A sudden drop in water pressure, a swelling ceiling, or the sound of water with every fixture off are all signs worth acting on.
If the water has been running for a while before you noticed, the extent of the damage may be beyond the visible spot. For hidden damage, our leak detection team can trace the path.
Why pipes fail in coastal homes
Common causes we see
- Corrosion at joints and along older copper or galvanized steel
- High water pressure that stresses fittings and supply hoses
- Ground movement or settling that pulls on buried lines
- Tree roots pressing on or cracking drain lines
- Failed fittings, worn compression connections and brittle plastic
- An occasional hard freeze, which is rare here but can split exposed lines and outdoor piping
Copper, PEX, PVC and cast iron: how each gets repaired
| Pipe type | Typical failure | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Pinholes, split sections, failed solder joints | Cut out the bad section and sweat in new copper or use proper couplings |
| PEX | Fitting failure, damage from impact or sun | Replace the damaged piece with the correct PEX fittings |
| PVC and CPVC | Cracks from stress, bad glue joints, brittle old pipe | Cut and replace the section, then pressure test |
| Galvanized steel | Internal rust, leaks at threads | Replace the section, and consider whether the rest of the line is worth keeping |
| Cast iron drain | Cracks, rotted joints, rusted bottoms | Replace with new drain pipe and proper couplings or a longer section |
A drain pipe that cracks does not spray. It leaks wastewater into walls or ground and often announces itself with odor or a slow stain. We repair those with the same urgency, because wastewater damage is worse than clean water damage.
Storm season and burst pipes
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and Jacksonville Beach has real history to point to. Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 brought a mandatory evacuation and major flooding, and it partly destroyed the pier. If you leave town for a storm, closing the main before you go removes the chance that a failed hose or line pours water into an empty house for days.
When you return after a storm or a long power outage, check for wet floors, listen for running water, and look at the meter before opening the taps. Flooded or shifted ground can damage buried lines even when the house looks fine. If anything looks off, we can come out for a same-day visit or an after-hours emergency.
Emergency repairs are still held to the IPC based Florida Building Code, Plumbing. We make the line safe first, then confirm with the city building division whether the permanent fix needs a permit.
Water already stopped?
Call now and we will book the repair, even if you got the main closed and the house is quiet.
After the repair: drying and documenting
Getting the pipe fixed is half the job. Wet drywall, insulation and flooring need to dry quickly, usually with fans and dehumidifiers, to avoid mold. Remove soaked materials that cannot dry, and keep receipts.
We write down what failed and where, which helps with claims and with any other work we recommend. If the pipe that failed was part of an aging run, we will point out where other sections could fail so you can plan. For widespread problems, repiping is the larger fix.
What affects the cost of a burst pipe repair
The scope depends on the pipe and the access. We give you a clear price before work starts.
Homeowner policies usually cover sudden and accidental burst damage, but not wear, gradual leaks or the failed pipe itself. Check your own policy, photograph all damage before cleanup, and keep the plumber's written findings for your claim.
Call and a dispatcher can explain how your situation would be priced.
If a burst pipe is tied to a service line failure between the meter and the house, see water line repair for how that is handled. We also dispatch to Neptune Beach and nearby towns.
Burst Pipe Repair questions in Jacksonville Beach
Yes. Dispatch is staffed 24/7, and a licensed plumber can come out overnight or on a weekend for a burst pipe. Same-day appointments are offered when available for pipes that are leaking slowly.
Close the main first, and tell the dispatcher what is wet and where.
Look near the water meter, at the point where the line enters the house, in a garage, or near the water heater. It is usually a round handle or a lever. Learn where it is before an emergency and test that it turns.
Policies usually cover sudden and accidental burst damage, but not wear, gradual leaks or the failed part itself. Read your own policy, photograph the damage before cleaning up, and ask your agent how to file.
If you are evacuating, closing the main is a sensible step, since it keeps a broken line from flooding an empty house. If you are staying, keep the main accessible. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.
Yes. We repair cracked drain and waste lines as well. We check the damage with a camera if needed and replace the failed section.
Water on the street side of the meter is the city's responsibility. Water inside your property line is yours. Call the city for the street side. For everything inside the house, call us.
If water is still moving through the house, close the main and let us take it from there.
